The basic mechanics from the motion detection sensor is relatively straightforward. Most motion sensors are passive, and sense changes in heat, and pick up the change in heat from movement of objects through the sensor field.  The sensor picks up rapid changes, and as a result, will trigger when an animal or person moves across the sensor range.  The sensor is set to not react to gradual changes in temperature, such as the cooling effect of the evening.  Keep this in mind when placing your motion sensor lights, to maximize performance for your needs.  You will see motion sensor lighting with type of sensing technology referred to as passive infrared sensors, or PIR.
